ANXIETY
Often referred to as Panic Attacks, Anxiety is successfully treated
using Cognitive Behavioral therapy. While it can also be one of the most frightening problems, rest
assured the physical symptoms are your body's normal reaction to a misperceived danger. Often times,
you end up in an Emergency Room but will be will be dismissed (literally) and told, "it is JUST
anxiety" and sent home with a prescription of anti-anxiety medication to "calm your nerves."
Realize that this medication is only a short-term and
temporary solution to your problem.
Our goal will be to help you manage the thoughts, feelings, and bodily reactions that lead to misperceived
danger and the subsequent panic attack. This is done by teaching you a comprehensive package of relaxation
activities including passive and active muscle relaxation; safe place imagery; and mindfulness meditation
activities. You will also be taught how to apply thought records (a cognitive therapy tool) to
aid you in de-catastrophizing life events either actual or anticipated.
So, if you are taking short term medications for anxiety, you may not need them much longer. If
you are not taking them, you will hopefully not need to start. I work in collaboration with physicians
so we would discuss that possibility together with the physician that prescribed the medication for you.
